Antarctica Set
This kit features a hat, mittens and neckwarmer pattern, it is a replica of a set J&S employee and knitter Sandra Manson gifted Dr. Alexander Kumar. Jamieson & Smith is proud to have had these wool garments accompany Dr. Alexander Kumar during his 2012 stay at Concordia Station, an Antarctic research station. Alex spent nine months at the station, enduring temperatures as cold as –91°C!
The hat is reversible, to suit your mood and give extra cosiness. Make the Fair Isle pattern side first, then you turn the hat inside out and make a lining for the hat. You can knit the lining all in one shade, or use up all your bits of spare wool making stripes. The hat is knitted in the round and an optional bobble can be added on one or both sides. If you decide to have a bobble on both sides, don’t make it too big or your hat won’t sit nicely on your head.
The neckwarmer is knitted in the round using the Fair Isle technique. Pattern rounds use two shades of yarn, and the shade not in use should be stranded loosely at the WS of the work, taking care not to pull too tight and pucker the fabric.
The mittens are knitted in the round from cuffs to fingertips. The thumb is added using the ‘afterthought’ method.
