This antique pattern features easy knitting rhythms, making it perfect for a first lace project. The edging was commonly used in Victorian times for the hem of baby’s baptismal gown. Pairing it with a traditional diamond pattern creates a connection with our sister knitters who made similar items over a hundred years ago.

Note for beginners: Unless you have experience knitting with fingering yarn, you may want to make the scarf in that weight (with a bit larger needle) before attempting to use laceweight yarn. Your scarf will be a bit larger and every bit as beautiful!

Scarf size 20 cm x 165 cm (8” X 64”); Shawl size 60 cm x 165 cm (24” X 64”)

Gauge: 24 stitches/10cm (4”) (Gauge doesn’t need to be exact for this project. You want a loose fabric with lots of drape, but not so loose that it looks sloppy.)

Materials: 400 m (440 yds) of lace weight yarn for scarf; 1100 m (1200 yds) for shawl; 3.25-4mm needles, or size needed to achieve desired gauge
