This pattern gives one possible way to knit the aperiodic ‘Einstein’ monotile announced in March 2023 by David Smith, Joseph Samuel Myers, Craig S. Kaplan, and Chaim Goodman-Strauss. It is freely scalable, so you can knit it any size you want, using any yarn you like. The default instructions produce a tile that is approximately 16cm x 11.5 cm using DK-weight yarn. Instructions for knitting a mirror-image tile are also included, with photo tutorials explaining any unconventional techniques.

The tile has a large section of plain stockinette in the middle, which is ideal for adding your own pattern ideas: stripes, intarsia elements, Fair Isle, or other colourwork or textures.
