The sun rises slowly in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina.

The inspiration for this half-hexagon shawl came from just such a slow sunrise. I love to get up early and watch the sun come up, even on vacation, and I got up to do just that while staying in a lovely little mountain cabin just a mile from the Appalachian Trail. I made my morning coffee, grabbed my knitting needles and settled in to watch the show of light streaming through the trees.

The sunrise took its time, and it made me think of how knitting can take a while sometimes too. This pattern embraces that feeling of slowing down and enjoying the process of creating something worth having; whether that “something” is crafted by sticks and string, or by nature itself.

This shawl is a half-hexagon construction with an optional (but awesome) color fade added to the lace motifs.
