Appenzeller Lace
Appenzeller Lace is an open, lacy, decorative scarf or shawl with swoops of color and dramatic contrasts in density.
The pattern was inspired by a trip to Switzerland with its long history of textile production and innovation, and features a variation of “stacked” hand knitting with mini short rows.
The advantage of this variation is that the multi-stitch stacked increases are relatively easy to manage on the needles.
Some previous experience of stacked stitches is an advantage for this pattern. The technique might seem a bit demanding at first but it quickly becomes intuitive.
Knit on 4.5mm/US7 needles with approximately 120g/500m/550yds
of Schoppelwolle Crazy Zauberball in the Cinnamon Bun and Change of Scenery colorways, with small amounts of Late Autumn, Cool Botanical Garden, Warm Botanical Garden and Dark Roses. It’s a good project for left overs.
Finished dimensions: approximately 56ins/142cm by 13.75ins/35cm
Approximate gauge: 16 stitches and 24 rows = 4in/10cm in stocking stitch
The project shown is scarf sized - you can make a bigger project by casting on more stitches (5 + multiple of 12). Allow more yarn!
This is a fully written pattern with notes on the stacked increases and decreases, instructions, a splicing phototutorial and photos.
There is no chart!
