This squishy, cozy coat will keep your little one warm as the wind blows and harvest season begins. There’s nothing that signals the onset of fall more than the crisp, sweet smell of freshly picked apples. This double knit coat is fully reversible with red apples on one side and green apples on the other, and simple tips are given as well to make this a one-sided, regular knit coat if double knitting is not something you’re ready to tackle yet. With a double layer of warmth and nice toasty pockets, this coat is sure to be a favorite for your child, grandchild, niece or the lovable little one next door!
Apple Turnover is a reversible double knit coat with A-line shaping worked in one piece bottom up to the armholes, and then worked in separate sections to the top. Sleeves are begun at the cuff and worked flat. A simple collar and pockets are worked separately and seamed on at the end.
Yarn: You will need 2(2, 2, 3, 3, 3) skeins each in two colors. If you are going to be knitting a one-sided version that is not double knit, you will need half the yardage requirements listed above.
Needles: Double knitting requires using a smaller needle than usual to meet gauge, so if you are not going to be double knitting, be sure to swatch with larger needles. I would suggest trying a size 7 first.
Materials: 2 stitch holders (or waste yarn), 6 stitch markers, cable needle or extra needle for making buttonholes, tapestry needle, 8(8, 10, 10, 12, 16) buttons, roughly 1”(2.5 cm) in width. (Number of buttons is a suggestion only.)
Skills Required: I recommend being comfortable with or ready to tackle double knitting, switching colors, buttonholes, seaming, increases and decreases. Many tips and links to tutorials are given to help the beginning double knitter to succeed!
