A funky scarf for those even who don’t ski, to wear around a cozy ski town and pretend they just got off the slopes. This is a great “stash busting” project if you want to combine multiple strands of DK or even fingering weight yarns together to make the bulky weight lettering.

Final Measurements:
Panels: 8” by 27” (20.25 x 68.5 cm) each
“Freestyle” section: 54” (137 cm)
108” (274.5 cm) total length; can be lengthened or shortened to knitters’ preference by changing length of “freestyle” section

Yarn in Sample:
Knit Collage MC: Serenity Boucle in “Polar Bear” white; 150 yd (137m)/100g (85% merino/15% nylon)
CCs: Daisy Chain in “Sweet Papaya” orange, “Peony Pink”, and “Smoky Quartz” grey; 60 yd (55m)/ 100g

Skeins: 3 skeins of MC and 1 of each CC

Yardage: MC: 450 yd (411 m) CC: 180 yd (165 m)

CONSTRUCTION:
The scarf is constructed flat in panels that are connected to a section of “freestyle” knitting. The difference in weights of the MC and CC are what create a 3D effect to the lettering.

Each lettering portion of the scarf is knit intarsia with a larger CC for a 3D effect for the lettering. A plain stockinette panel is knit separately for the backing and mattress stitched along the sides of the front lettering panel. The two letter “tubes” are knit this way and then freestyle knit with different stripes with the extra yarn and joined together with grafting (kitchener).

A more advanced knitter I can made in the round with magic loop, doing so requires the “loop method” for intarsia in the round (suzanne bryan has a great tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgWS-IiFpEE)

other yarn ideas:
I think it would be fun to alternated different color blocks as the MC and use 1 color CC. Two Bulky yarns can also be used for both MC and CC instead of a Worsted and Bulky, feel free to play around!
