Aqualicious is part of The Gorgeousness Collection - a collection of shawl patterns that are lacy and full of beady gorgeousness! Purchasing the collection as an ebook will be more economical than buying the patterns individually and is the only way to get the pattern that is exclusive to the collection. Please see the lower box to the right for the ‘collection’ purchase option.
Aqualicious is a top down, crescent shaped shawl with an all over lace design. Size 6 seed beads lurk among the vertical, frond-like, patterning creating a flow evocative of an underwater garden that seamlessly merges into an intricate (but simple to knit) beaded lace border that any Mermaid would feel was created especially for them.
Designed to be worked in a heavy lace weight yarn, the original was knit in Lichtfaden Rei Lace, 625m/100g containing mohair and silk which gives fabulous texture (though it could be knit in almost any weight). Aqualicious exudes elegance and sophistication whatever yarn you choose is even more special when knit in that special skein of luxurious gorgeousness you have been saving for Sunday Best!
Yarn and Finished Dimensions: As written 72” (183cm) wide, 18.5” (47cm) deep before blocking and 73” (185.5cm) wide, 22” (56cm) deep after. Measurements taken using Lichtfaden Rei Lace 625m/100g though this pattern is suitable for most heavy lace yarns of around 600m/100g with the exception of alpaca based and other yarns that will not hold a block well. Note that measurements will differ depending on yarn, tension, blocking etc and these are therefore given as a guide only.
Alternative suggested yarns include: Lichtfaden Meridian 600m/100g, Posh Yarn Gretchen Heavy Lace 600m/100g, Miss Babs Yearning 1095m/195g, Natural Born Dyers Lustrous Myrka 600m/100g, Green Tea Yarns Ginseng Heavy Lace 600m/100g.
Circular Needles: 3.25mm (US3), 3.5mm (US4), 3.75mm (US5) and 4mm (US6) about 1m in length or needles to create a pleasing fabric – your fabric should not be too dense and should have good drape.
You will also need: stitch markers, just under 1250 Miyuki size 6 seed beads, 1mm crotat hook or 0.75mm crochet hook, needle (for weaving in ends), blocking pins and mats.
Gauge: Gauge is not overly important as this is a shawl but a looser gauge will result in an increase in yarn usage. However, the gauge achieved on this shawl was 22 sts to 4” before blocking 16 sts to 4” after using 3.5mm (US4) needles over main body stitch pattern (Chart 2).
You will find it very useful to print your pattern on a colour printer or you could mark bead placement in coloured pencils.
The pattern is both fully written and charted.
