Arabian Dream was inspired by my horse, Watson. He is the sweetest little Arabian you’ll ever meet! I used Naomi Parkhurst’s technique for encoding words into knitting patterns to create a lace pattern out of his name. This lace pattern alternates with fields of lacy clover. The sample was knit with one full skein and five mini skeins of Shimmy from Dancing Leaf Dyeworks.

This pattern was designed to make the most of a set of 5 minis (Contrast Colors - CC) and one full skein (Main Color - MC) of Shimmy from Dancing Leaf Dyeworks. The sample used all but about a yard of each of the contrast colors. You may substitute another set of minis or use leftovers, but you will need a minimum of 92 yds/84 m for each contrast color to make a shawl exactly like the sample. If you would like to use more colors, you could also use minis in place of the MC - you will need a minimum of 70 yds/64 m for each MC section. All of these measurements assume that you follow the directions for the sample and that your gauge is the same or very close to that of the sample. If your mini skeins are less than 92 yds/84 m, there are places in Section/Chart B that you may end early. Or you could make a more narrow shawl by casting on fewer stitches.

Yarn - Shimmy Dancing Leaf Dyeworks, 464 yards (424 m), 1 skein

Shimmy minis from Dancing Leaf Dyeworks, 92 yds (84 m), 
5 skeins

Needles - US size 4 (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge below. 32”/80 cm circular recommended. If you are using a yarn different from the sample, use a needle that gives you a fabric you like.

Gauge - 19 sts by 29 rows equals 4”/10 cm in Section/Chart B lace pattern, blocked. Gauge is not overly important as long as you are happy with the fabric.

Finished size - 62”/158 cm long and 18”/46 cm wide
