I wanted this sock pattern to be a useful staple pattern:

  • It’s pretty but the patterning is not complicated.
  • It’s very stretchy; making for a good fit.
  • The pattern includes modification information for different styles of toe (wide or pointy), different sizes, and a suggestion to make a more unisex version by swapping the lace for rib.

Everyone’s feet are different; there is no one sock pattern that suits all, but by providing a good basic model and then information on tailoring, I hope this is a pattern than suits many.

The heel can be added at any time after you begin work on the leg - which means this is an excellent knit night, waiting room or other public knitting project: you just keep working and you can worry about the heel when you’ve got the headspace to work it later.

Aramoana is named after the tiny seaside village of Aramoana in New Zealand.

This pattern was included in instalment one of the Vintage Purls Summer Sock Yarn Club 2014.
