Archaeopteryx was a small (pigeon sized) birdlike therapod dating from the late Jurassic c.147 mya.
The name means ancient wing (from the Greek: archaeos + pteryx) and it was a link between dinosaurs and birds rather than a true bird ancestor.
Analysis of some of the beautifully preserved feathers from the German limestone deposits have suggested that they were coloured mainly black, and the structure may not have been not strong enough for sustained powered flight.

You will need two skeins of yarn in contrasting colours.

The pattern is 47sts by 58 rows done in double knitting, and comes out at 10 inches square on 4mm needles.

You could use thicker yarn and larger needles for a larger square if you wish.
