Introducing the ARDEN Cardigan – A Classy Faux Cable Design
Looking for the perfect snuggly cardigan for spring or a breezy cover-up for summer? The ARDEN Cardigan might be just what you need!
This versatile pattern works with anything from lace-weight to bulky yarn, letting you create a unique version that’s stylish and functional for any season! Choose thicker and fluffier yarn to create a snuggly cardigan or choose a lightweight cotton yarn for the perfect summer cover-up.
At first glance, the textured “faux cable” stitches may seem intricate, but don’t worry—they’re made using simple, repetitive stitch combinations. With detailed step-by-step pictures and a video tutorial, you’ll find this cardigan easier to crochet than it looks. And since the pattern accommodates up to #5 bulky yarn, using a thicker yarn means you’ll finish even faster!
About this pattern:
• Pattern is written in English with standard US terms.
• All words in blue with an underline are hyperlinks—click them to access the intended page.
• The hyperlinks in this file won’t work if you open it directly in Google Drive, you need to download the PDF file and open it with other programs / app, or you can open the PDF file with Microsoft Edge.
• As I am right-handed, this pattern is written with right-handed crocheters in mind, left-handed crocheters should crochet in the opposite direction.
• This pattern is suitable for advanced beginner crocheters, it has minimal shaping and made up from basic stitches (p.s: will provide video tutorial for more advanced stitches such as FPedc, so don’t worry).
• This crochet pattern is mainly worked in rows, only the sleeves are worked in rounds.
About this cardigan:
• This piece is worked top-down, we are going to start with making the back panels, front panels, torso then the sleeves.
• This piece will have an oversized fit.
• As it is constructed top-down, you can decide the length of the cardigan by trying it on after you are done with the Back and Front Panels.
• This piece WON’T require sewing; we will add panels to the existing panel.
• This piece will have a V-neckline with a front button-up closure; please note that the V-neckline will fall around your underbust.
• This piece will have drop shoulders, which means the front and back panels will be wider than your shoulder width.
• There are two variations for the sleeves: straight sleeve with cuffed wrist or tapered sleeve with cuffed wrist
p.s: I know some might say that my written pattern looks so intimidating because of the oh so many pages
and the supplementary calculator. But don’t worry, this long pdf file means there are tons of
step by step picture and diagrams to help you get through it.
++ with the excel spreadsheet, you won’t need to do math, the calculator will do it for you
(because I know, I am not the only one who hate math, and I am not the only one who are just too lazy to match gauge).
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A DIGITAL
CROCHET PATTERN AND TUTORIAL ONLY,
NOT A FINISHED ITEM / PRODUCT.
There will be NO physical item, product, material or tools to be send.
All the pattern and instruction is written in English, using standard US terms.
Materials & tools needed:
• ANY YARN WEIGHT WORKS
• Crochet Hook that is the recommended size for your yarn weight and second crochet hook that is one size larger (one size larger means 3.00 mm and 3.50 mm, 4.00mm and 4.50 mm, etc).
• Scissors
• Stitch markers
• Measuring tape / ruler
• Darning needle (to weave the end tails)
• 4-6 buttons (recommended button size: diameter 1.2 cm – 2.5 cm)
Yarn usage based on my measurements (bust 81 cm, shoulder 38 cm)
- #1 fingering weight yarn (women bust size S): cardigan length 36 cm, I used approximately 170g of #1 fingering weight (acrylic yarn + 1 strand of mohair), used 2.50mm hook
- #3 DK weight yarn (women bust size S): cardigan length 36 cm, I used approximately 300g of #2 sport weight cotton blend yarn + 1 strand of mohair, used 3.50mm hook
- #5 Bulky weight yarn (women bust size S): cardigan length 50 cm, I used approximately 400g of acrylic yarn (acrylic yarn mixed with mohair and towel yarn), used 4.50 mm hook
Note: if you use pure cotton yarn, the weight will be doubled as it is heavier than cotton blend and acrylic blend.
(How much yarn you required is highly depends on the yarn weight, yarn type, crochet hook size, your tension, bust size, I put the detailed info on how much yarn does each testers used in the lookbook)
Yarn recommendation:
- Heavier weight yarn will create wider grid, boxier and more constructed piece
- Lighter weight yarn will create smaller grid and the drape will be flowy.
- Please note that fluffy and fuzzy yarn (such as mohair, alpaca, etc) is not suitable for beginners because it will be harder to see and count the stitches
- If you want to make kid’s version: 0-3 years old: lace weight or fingering weight yarn 4-10 years old: DK yarn (max)
Crochet hook reference:
Note: You can make couple of gauge swatch to see which version you like the best.
• for those who has tight tension, I highly recommend you to use a larger hook to avoid the stitches become too dense and the cardigan turn out too heavy.
For example, the hooks that I used for my Arden cardigan:
- #1 fingering weight acrylic yarn: 3.00 mm for FC, 2.50 mm for everything else
- #3 DK weight cotton blend yarn: 4.00 mm for FC, 3.50 mm for everything else
- #5 Bulky weight acrylic blend yarn: 5.00 mm for FC, 4.50 mm for everything else
