I was reorganizing my studio and realized I had a lot of odds and ends left over from the shawls I have knitted. Since it was all handspun, I wanted to make something out of it but the design would have to accommodate lots of different colors and amounts. Also, while the yarns were all lace weight, there is a fairly large range of yarn grist that fit into this category. The obvious answer to me was to do a variation on a Shetland Hap using a variation of Feather and Fan that would highlight the striping that was going to happen. I also decided that I wanted a circular shawl instead of a square one. I love the sense of movement you can get in a circular shawl.

While it was inspired by the Shetland haps, this shawl is knitted in the round from the center to the edge. The size is easily adjusted.

This pattern is intended to be a frame-work for you to design your own color story. I think it would be lovely worked in a solid or a gradient. You could do stripes with a much smaller number of colors, repeating colors, and using stripes of whatever size you want. I used 24 colors and the width of the stripes was dependent on how much yarn I had since I was trying to use it up. I did stop a few stripes before running out of yarn because I didn’t want them to get too wide relative to the other colors. 16 rounds was my limit. Make it with the odds and ends you have laying around, souvenir skeins from your travels, or some carefully curated yarn chosen for the pattern. Have fun and enjoy!

Warning - the pattern has not been test knitted by anyone other than myself so there may be errors. Please let me know if you find any and I will post a corrected version. Thanks.
