The cabled and cozy Arête Hat is a wonderful wintertime accessory. This hat uses short-row shaping on the earflaps and the back of the head. The edging and braided ties are worked in two colors, adding a wonderful pop of color.

Finished Size 15 ¾ (18 ½, 21)“ circumference, relaxed, and 10 ¾” tall from bottom of earflap. Hat shown measures 18 ½“.
Yarn Knit Picks Swish DK (100% fine superwash Merino wool; 123 yd 112 m/ 1 ¾ oz 50 g): #24063 Holly Berry (MC), 2 (3, 3) skeins (see Notes); #24956 Dove Heather (CC), 1 skein.
Needles Size 4 (3.5 mm): 16” circular (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions Markers (m); cable needle (cn); stitch holder; 3” pom-pom; tapestry needle.
Gauge 24 (27, 30) sts of Braid chart = 2 ¼ (2 5/8, 3)“ wide, relaxed; 36 rows = 4” tall.

This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. Short-rows shape the earflaps and back of head, then the piece is worked in the round to the top.

To work in pattern after the first increase round, work the first stitch of a k1f&b as a knit and the second stitch as a purl.

The 15 3/4” size used almost all of two skeins of yarn. Consider purchasing an extra skein as insurance.
