Inspired by the mining towns of the Colorado Rockies, this lightweight poncho featuring a cabled border is a perfect addition to an outfit for a little extra warmth in the fall and spring months.

Each of the cable panels is worked flat, then seamed together to form the Vee shape of the bottom border. Stitches for the bodice are picked up and worked in the round from the top edges of the two cable panels. Symmetric decreases at the center front and back form the Vee shape of the poncho. Optional short rows at the shoulders provide extra length on the sides of the poncho.

While the pattern is written for one size, it would be easily adjusted to a smaller/larger size by modifying the length of the cable panels and the number of stitches picked up for the bodice. I used exactly 2 skeins of the contrast color (Golden Nugget) for the cable panels–one skein for each panel. The pattern offers advice on how to shorten/lengthen the bodice.

Gauge: 18.5 sts x 30 rows in
4”x 4” (10 x 10cm)
with US5 (3.75 mm) needles in stockinette stitch.
