Argyle and plaid Christmas tree decorations
Ability Level: Experienced
In order to make the finished knitting square you will need to dress block the finished pieces before sewing up.
Pattern for front of each ornament is charted, pattern for back is written.
Materials required for each ornament: One pair of size 16 (1.5 mm/ US 000) knitting needles; approximately 55 yards/50 metres 2-ply yarn in main colour; approximately 20 yards/18.5 metres 2-ply yarn in each of two or three contrasting colours; small amount of polyester stuffing; sewing needle with large eye.
Note the same pattern may be used to make smaller decorations using size 19 (1 mm/US 00000) knitting needles; approximately 55 yards/50 metres 1-ply yarn in main colour; approximately 20 yards/18.5 metres 1-ply yarn in each of two or three contrasting colours; small amount of polyester stuffing; sewing needle with large eye.
Finished sizes after dressing/blocking:
Using size 16 (1.5 mm/ US 000) knitting needles 3-inches/7.5 cm square
Using size 19 (1 mm/US 00000) knitting needles 2-inches/25 cm square
Gauge:
Argyle 1
Using size 16 (1.5 mm/ US 000) knitting needles 1-inch/2.5 cm square = 13 sts by 14 rows
Using size 19 (1 mm/US 00000) knitting needles 1-inch/2.5 cm square = 20sts by 21 rows
Argyle 2
Using size 16 (1.5 mm/ US 000) knitting needles 1-inch/2.5 cm square = 13 sts by 10 rows (when stretched into shape)
Using size 19 (1 mm/US 00000) knitting needles 1-inch/2.5 cm square = 20 sts by 15 rows (when stretched into shape)
Plaid/Tartan
Using size 16 (1.5 mm/ US 000) knitting needles 1-inch/2.5 cm square = 13 sts by 10 rows (when stretched into shape)
Using size 19 (1 mm/US 00000) knitting needles 1-inch/2.5 cm square = 20sts by 15 rows (when stretched into shape)
Although these decorations have been made in Christmas colours you may prefer to incorporate the colours of your own tartan/plaid instead.
