The Atomic Robin Hood Beekeeper’s Buttons Cowl was inspired by the fairytale feel of autumn in the Adirondacks. It is worked from the neck down using a two-color brioche rib. The cowl is fully reversible and has four buttons that are sewn on back-to-back so they can share the same two buttonholes at the side of the neck. Additionally, the back-to-back buttons make the neckline of the cowl convertible. Wearers can leave the fabric straight up and down or flip it downward like a turtleneck to show both sides of the cowl and buttons.

Size: One size fits all (adult).

Gauge: 19 sts & 21 rows = 4” in Step 1 instructions after blocking.
Note: This cowl is forgiving. You do not need to meet the gauge perfectly.

You will need:

  • US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles (24”) Note: The garment will be knit flat, so circular needles provide extra length. Additionally, with this brioche stitch, circular needles or long DPNs are required. Straight needles with fixed stoppers will not work for this pattern as you will need access to both ends of the work.
  • Tapestry/yarn needle
  • 4 buttons (1” diameter)
  • Scissors

Knitters will need to be comfortable with:

  • Knitting and purling flat
  • Knitting multiple stitches together
  • Yarn-overs
  • Slip stitches
  • Directional decreases
  • two-color brioche
  • buttonholes
  • blanket stitch (to reinforce buttonholes)
