Ariete Ram's Head Hat
I created this design in honor of the Chinese zodiac Year of the Ram/Sheep/Goat, but it is also perfect for your favorite Aries or Capricorn! The stranded border is a repeat of a ram’s head motif. Shown as a slouchy beanie, all sizes except the smallest can also be worked with a shorter crown for a more fitted look. This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up, and is shown with an optional pompom.
Difficulty: Intermediate: Skills include working in the round, reading a chart, and stranded knitting.
Finished Size
14 (16¾, 19½, 221/4)“/35.5 (42.5, 49.5, 56.5) cm circumference, to fit babies, toddlers/children, teens/small adults, and large adults. Recommend measuring wearer’s head for best fit; most wearers prefer hats with 1-2” of negative ease. Height of hat is approximately 6 (7½, 8½ , 9¾)”/15 (19, 22, 24.5) cm.
Shown in size 221/4”/56.5cm with zero ease.
Yarn:** Light worsted weight (#3 Light) yarn. Main Color (MC): 140 (180, 220, 270) yd/125 (165, 200, 245) m. Contrast Color (CC): About 30% of MC yardage. Yardages include pompom.
If using a variegated yarn for MC and/or CC, ALL colors within one yarn(s) should be lighter or darker than ALL colors in other yarn, or design will not display properly.
Shown in (MC) Cascade Yarns Superwash 220, 100% superwash wool, 220 yds (201 m)/100 g skein, #862 walnut heather, 1 (1, 1, 2) skeins; (CC) Madelinetosh Tosh DK, 100% superwash merino wool, 225 yds (206 m)/100 g skein, color Whiskers, 1 skein for all sizes.
