Armenian Knit Grumpy Cat Sweater
Pattern is no longer available
July 2011 note:
ok, so the notes and messages continue to arrive. I’ve decided it isn’t worth keeping this pattern available for download. I’ll keep the pictures up for “inspiration”. I hope they can be helpful to someone interested in making this sweater. Please check out Barbara Service-Hilliard’s very cool (if not my preferred construction or style) cat sweater from the 80’s in Vogue. I have no idea where or if you can find it, but the internet is amazing so I imagine with a little effort you may strike gold. ;-)
This sweater was inspired by my favorite childhood sweater knitted by an aunt. I still have that sweater, and though it has held up reasonably well, this sweater conveys the feeling of that grumpy looking cat and allowed me to knit uninterrupted by color changes or seams. The graphic is knit not using intarsia, but a technique called Armenian Knitting. This method gives knitters the ability to create large color motifs without breaking the wool or knitting garments in flat pieces. Because of the secondary color carried behind the knitting throughout, the fabric is thick, cushy, and has flecks of the secondary color that peek through giving a tweed like effect.
You can watch a short video showing the “trapping” technique used in Armenian Knitting in the tutorials section of http://SeamlessKnits.com
