Arrow-Dynamic Socks
Introduction
This design explores interlocking repeated patterns, inspired by MC Escher.
The arrow repeat is really easy to memorise, and flexible for using up scraps, changing MC on round 1 and CC on round 6.
The pattern has both charted and written instructions. It has been tech edited and test knitted.
Design notes
This is a cuff-down, slip stitch heel flap and turn construction.
Note: the texture is firmer because of the stranded colourwork, so a 2.5mm needle is better than 2.25mm/US1. If you knit a lot of socks, you’ll notice you need more stitches per round than normal rib or stocking stitch socks for this reason.
Techniques used: working in the round, two-colour stranded knitting, working flat, picking up stitches
Size
To fit foot circumference: Small (20-24cm/ 8-9.5”), Medium (24-28cm/ 9.5-11”), Large (28-32cm/ 11-12.5”).
Actual unstretched circumference: Small (18cm/7”), Medium (22cm/ 8.5”), Large (24cm/ 9.5”).
Gauge
10x10cm/ 4x4” = 36 sts x 42 rows
Needles
2.5mm/US 1.5 needles for working in the round (DPNs or circs of at least 23cm/9in).
Notions
Tapestry needle, 5 stitch markers (one which looks different so you know it’s the BOR marker).
Yarn
Choose two contrasting colours of 4ply/fingering yarn suitable for socks. I wouldn’t recommend using highly variegated yarn with this design.
It would work well with minis or scraps in a spectrum or gradient, or with one solid colour and one gradient.
You’ll need about 50g/200m/218yd each of the Main Colour and the Contrast Colour.
The sample in size M (UK size 6 feet) uses:
Mamie and Florrie Adventure Sock Yarn. MC: Roses from the Sorbonne; CC: 80’s Orange and Oklahoma (these were 20g/85m/93yd mini skeins. I used two of the orange and a tiny amount of the pink)
