I was taken by a fancy to combine two stitches from Barbara Walker’s Treasury of Knitting Stitches, first in alternation, and then by blending them together. I think Little Arrowheads and English Mesh combine well. These straightforward stitches make something that looks more complex than it is.
Pattern is written with guidance for adjusting to different quantities of yarn. Stitch patterns can be worked in any order as desired.
Size:

  • Sample shawl is 66 inches (168cm) wide and 17 inches (43cm) deep.

Materials needed:

  • Sample used 335 yards (306m) of BC Garn Semilla, a sportweight yarn.
  • Pattern can be worked in laceweight, fingering weight, or sport weight yarn, but will need different yardage depending on the yarn weight and desired shawl size.
  • US size 7 needles (4.5mm), or needles to make a fabric you like with your yarn. Sample was knit on a 40 inch (100cm) circular needle.
  • Yarn needle for working in ends.

Techniques:

  • You need to know how to knit, purl, yarn over, decrease (ssk, k2tog, and cdd), work a stretchy bind-off, and block lace. Sample uses Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off.
  • Shawl is cast on using disappearing loop, explained in the pattern.
  • Instructions are charted and written.
