Art Button Head Wraps

Be warm with artistic flair!

Two versions are included in this pattern and both can be knit with one skein of Plymouth Mega.

The first image features a resin art button. The second image features the “sister” glass button to the original. It is glass, but thicker, and much more durable. It’s handmade by the same artist, Donna Ernst, as is the clay button in the third image.

A button inspired these head wrap patterns. Not just any button, but Donna’s beautiful, hand made big glass button, with swirls of clear and opaque black and white glass, encasing a bright opaque orange strip. It was my favorite button. I looked at it nearly each day for the last year at the studio, thinking, “Someday, I’ll knit something just right for this button.” The yarn and the day came and these head wraps emerged. Sadly, as I prepared to sew it on, the thin glass of my favorite button slipped from my fingers onto the concrete floor and shattered. I couldn’t believe it! I had to quickly gather up the broken pieces of my idea, toss them out, and move on, so I wouldn’t be too heartbroken.

So, I’m sharing this cautionary tale. Thick glass buttons are terrific art elements for these patterns, but require some extra care. (That means you can’t take off the head wrap and throw it onto a hard surface, like we might all do - lol.) Therefore, I also recommend wood, clay or acrylic for the art button. A felted pin or shawl pin will do nicely, too. Make it your own with a unique embellishment.

This pattern has two head wrap versions. Each pattern version uses unique selvage stitches. It is a beautiful finish to the edges and works well with the super bulky yarn used in these projects. Both may be knit with one skein of Encore Mega Colorspun.

You will also need one art button for each head wrap, approximately 1 1/2” or larger. A shawl pin or felted pin may also be used for embellishment.
A needle for sewing the ends together and attaching the button.
