When I first starting spinning, all the yarn I made was thick and thin, great fats slubs escaping through my fingers onto the spool.
Once I’d got the knack, smooth yarn began to emerge, consistently slim along its length.
After a while, I fancied making some ‘art yarn’ , inspired by such as Colinette’s Point 5.
I couldn’t do it! Those slubs eluded me! I actually went on a course to relearn how to make them!

Once I had my first art yarns, then came the pondering on what to do with it. If you knit it plain, you lose some of it’s lusciousness.
Those beautiful slubs need to be seen, not squashed.

The technique for this shawl displays the art yarn, whether handspun or shop-bought, in a single row between sections of cobweb yarn. With my version , the art yarn travels diagonally across your back and over the shoulders.

I’ve put a selection of yarn suggestions for the pattern, but it is completely suitable for handspun.

The amount needed varies depending on slub size, needles used etc. but you can make the shawl smaller or larger. I’ve written a tip for working out when to stop.
The shawl shown uses-
Colinette Point 5 - 80 metres (87yards)
Colinette Parisienne - 30 metres (33 yards)

You will need about a metre of broomstick handle and a whittling knife(!), or a pair of knitting needles , any size between 15 and 30mm.
