Joined with buttons at the back of the neck, after a simple ribbed buttonband is worked, this item is easy to put on and no fancy adjustments are needed to make it sit nicely around the neck. The cast-on edge begins at one side of the tip of the triangle at the bottom, so the cable pattern appears diagonally when the cowl is worn. When knitting this project, it may help to divide the pattern repeats with stitch markers. A yarn that will bloom a bit after blocking is recommended,, so that the project will block to the measurements given here and also to ensure that this knitted accessary will drape softly.

Measurements, gauge, and needle sizes are given in the pattern to work this in DK as well as an Aran weight yarn. The Aran cowl is larger.

Note on the Name: According to a local genealogist, Artley--or the shortened version, Arty--may have originated as an Appalachian pronunciation of Adelia. The name is also a surname from Great Britain, one meaning hart (stag) and lea (meadow). The name seemed appropriate for an arty little cowl, designed in Appalachia, made from a British yarn evocative of flax-filled meadows.
