The Renaissance motif on this cowl resembles the strobilus of a Horsetail plant (Equisetum arvense). Horsetail, also known as Shavegrass, Paddock Pipes, or Bottle Brush, is the only living example of a 100 million year old group of plants that grew to the height of pine trees. Now it is a much smaller woodland plant found across Alberta. Horsetail was used by various indigenous cultures for dyeing, yielding a soft green colour and the stalks were used to make whistles to call spirits.
