From December of 2010 to the time of writing, the key photo on the Wikipedia ‘sock’ page has been a hand knitted sock. If you’ve ever looked at that picture and thought, “I wish I had those socks!”, then this is the pattern for you! This is a cuff down traveling stitch cable sock pattern, with a standard heel flap construction and charted design. The pattern includes instructions for four sizes, both with and without calf shaping. The sock shown on Wikipedia is the medium size with no calf shaping.

Gauge: 9 stitches per inch in stockinette

Supplies: (70, 90, 110) grams of fingering weight yarn for a (small, medium, large) Needles: US size 1 (2.25 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Sizing
The (small, medium, large, extra large) socks will have (68, 72, 76, 80) stitches at the ankle. For straight cuffs (no calf shaping), you will cast on the number of ankle stitches minus four: cast on (64, 68, 72, 76) stitches. If you are doing ankle shaping, you may choose how many additional stitches to cast on depending on how much larger you would like the calf, in a multiple of 8. For 8 additional calf stitches, you will cast on (72, 76, 80, 84), for 16 additional calf stitches you will cast on (80, 84, 88, 92). NOTE: you can use a multiple of 4 additional calf shaping stitches. Instructions for doing so are not provided, but can be extrapolated from the charts provided.
