Ashling
Ashling - I borrowed this name from the daughter of one of my Ravelry friends. I had never heard this beautiful name before, and learned that it is Irish and means “Dream”….
I have wanted to use it for naming a pattern a long time, but I had to wait until the right project came up:)
When I started my Ashling shawl I decided that I didn’t want to hurry. I would use it as an in-between project, which meant that I would knit a few rows now and then. Due to the feather-weight of the yarn I could bring it along everywhere I went, I just tucked it on top of my bag. I have been knitting in the car waiting for my daughter, in the train going to Copenhagen, in a café waiting for my food to arrive, at the sea-front, even in the forest:). And all of these small moments brought together made a huge shawl!
Construction The shawl starts from a provisional cast on for one of the chevron lace-borders, which is worked top-down. From the po sts you work the body of the shawl into the other direction and bottom-up. The white sections of the shawl are worked in spanish lace, the mid-section in grey is worked in diamond lace for the center, bordered by spanish lace. The final lace-border is worked bottom-up and continued over the last section of Spanish lace.
The pattern comes with instructions on how to work the shawl to other dimensions. It contains a schematic showing the knitting directions. All lace patterns are both charted and written out, row by row. The pattern gives you an easy to follow guideline to work the shawl.
Size As the lace-borders, the Spanish lace and the Diamond lace are built up around the same amount of sts you can make this shawl as large or narrow, as long or short as you desire. Whether you want to make it into a bed-spread (that would be lovely:)) or a narrow scarf or table-runner all is possible by adding or subtracting pattern repeats.
The sample shawl measures 80cmx200cm/31.5x79”
Yarn and needles:
I used Svarta Fårets 1-trådiga ullgarn to make the shawl. This wool comes in skeins of 100gr/3.53oz and 600m/660yards. I needed 2 skeins of each color - but please note that I was left with a couple of metres only of the grey yarn! Needle size 3mm/US2.5 or needles to achieve gauge.
Gauge The sample is made using a gauge of 25 sts to 10cm/4”
Gauge is not important, except if you want to work to exact measurements of the sample shawl.
Along the way I blocked my shawl - just for the pleasure of seeing the beauty of the lace:)
