This stole pattern explores the construction of the oval shape with straight edges and half circles on each end. Color and texture changes occur at the same time as the increase rounds. There are also two short row sections on one side to show off the variegated yarn and to add depth to the oval.

The two fingering weight yarns used in the sample have the same fiber content, but are spun differently. Almost any wool or wool-blend fingering weight yarn would work well in this stole pattern, so don’t be afraid to combine two different yarns to get the color contrast that you desire.

Required Skills:
This project begins with a crochet chain and the first round of stitches worked into the chain. Knitter will need to be able to work in the round using either two circular needles (recommended) or magic loop. The project is worked in the round from the center out using knit, purl, yarn over, make 1 increase, and centered double decreases (explained in the instructions) in the main pattern. The border uses a daisy stitch created with K3togs and a unique bind-off, but could easily be replaced with a simple garter stitch border. The short row sections are optional.

Note: Pattern includes a tutorial to show how to work the first round of knitting into the crochet chain that starts the piece.

Finished Measurements:
16 in. (40.75 cm) x 60 in. (152.5 cm) without short row sections
19 in. (48.25 cm) x 60 in. (152.5 cm) with short row sections

Gauge:
19.5 sts and 30 rows = 4” square (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, measured after blocking

Needles and Hooks:
U.S. size 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles or size needed to produce noted gauge.
Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook or size slightly larger than needles used.

Yarn:
Color A - Space Cadet Creations Oriana 8-ply,
100% Superwash Merino Wool, 420 yds/3.5 oz
“Grave Goods”, 1 skein, Approximately 410 yards used in sample Sample included both short row sections.

Color B – Space Cadet Creations Celeste,
100% Superwash Merino Wool, 490 yds/3.5 oz
“Sliver“, 1 skein, Approximately 375 yards used in sample

Good Yarn Substitutions – Any sock or fingering weight yarn in a wool or wool-blend. A sock yarn with 25% nylon content may not drape or block open as much as 100% wool, so consider going up a needle size or two in this case. A handspun yarn in fingering weight should work well, too.
