Inspiration
Aspen trees are a symbol of adaptation and resilience. In a ecosystem where mostly evergreen trees thrive, aspens developed traits that aid in their survival. With leaves that reduce wind damage to the trunk, to photosynthetic bark, and growing in groves with highly interconnected root systems, this tree is a symbol of grit.
Weaving, twisted cables support lacy leaves in this large, cozy shawl. The shawl serves as a reminder to stay in touch with your heritage and to foster connection, growing a support system around you.

Construction Notes
This shawl utilizes an icord cast on and is worked from the top down, with 4 increases every other row, continuing the icord down the edges. Work the triangular panels twice for a triangle shawl or three times for a 3/4 square shawl. Triangle construction is noted with 3/4 square shawl construction in parentheses: 2 (3) times. Markers are placed at the edges and between each panel to keep the piece organized. The shawl is finished with an icord bind off. The last three edge stitches are grafted together with 3 stitches from the icord bind off for a continuous icord edge. Due to the cable construction’s similarities to ribbing, the top edge will be curved until it is aggressively blocked.

• Malabrigo Rios (100% Superwash Merino)
• Worsted (10-ply) Weight, 210 yards (192 meters) / 3.53 ounces (100 grams) per skein
• 4 (6) heavy skeins - samples photographed in the Fresco Y Seco colorway
• 812 total yards / 743 total meters (1218 yards / 1114 meters) of worsted weight yarn
• Individual yardage will vary based on gauge: Test knitters used from 760-1200 yards. If you knit loosely or do not check gauge, please make sure to have plenty of extra yarn.

Gauge

• Stockinette on Larger Needles: 19 sts and 28 rows = 4” (10cm), unblocked
• Cables on Larger Needles: 19 sts and 21 rows = 4” (10cm), aggressively blocked
• Lace on Smaller Needles: 16 sts and 23 rows = 4” (10cm), aggressively blocked
• To produce an open lace and soft, drapey fabric.
• Pattern includes detailed swatching instructions, including swatch recipes for stockinette, the cabled section, and the lace section.

Needles

• One 60” (150m) + circular needle in size needed to obtain stockinette gauge listed
• One 60” (150cm) + circular needle in size 0.5mm smaller diameter than needle above
• Suggested Sizes: US8 (5mm), US7 (4.5mm)
