This scarf pattern was designed with a limited edition yarn dyed by Yoriko Oki in collaboration with GaryKnitsAndRides for Stitch Out Loud, a fundraiser to end AIDS.

Proceeds from the sale of this pattern will be donated to the Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy (OAHAS), a foundation that “provides culturally respectful and sensitive programs and strategies to respond to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic among Aboriginal Peoples in Ontario, through promotion, prevention, long-term care, treatment and support initiatives consistent with harm reduction principles.” (https://www.oahas.org/)

The scarf is knit on the bias, so everything looks a little sideways, with the stripes undulating as the two colours rotate through the three components of the stitch pattern—my impression of what the road might look like at the end of a long, hot day of cycling. The shaping, and the simple 2-stitch, 6-row repeat in the design, would lend themselves to yarns of different weights and fibres. It would be a quick knit in a chunky yarn on big needles, for example. You could experiment (i.e., swatch) to find your perfect match between yarn and gauge. You could also try different striping sequences (Rows 1-2 in one colour, Rows 3-6 in a second colour would be particularly attractive, for example), or knit your scarf in one solid colour.
