Hello and welcome to the crochet pattern for Asra the Luna Moth! I have always been enchanted by the luna moth. Its colors always seemed so otherworldly and unlike those of most other animals, especially moths. I decided to call my luna moth, Asra, an Arabic word that means “travel at night”, a phrase that I found fitting for a moth. I hope you enjoy following this pattern to make your own luna moth and thank you so much for your support.

This pattern is only available in English. This is an intermediate, level 2 crochet pattern. It is written in US terminology and uses metric measurements. My patterns can be of the following difficulties: Beginner level 1, Beginner level 2, Intermediate level 1, Intermediate level 2. Level 1’s are easier than level 2’s. Even though this is an intermediate pattern, I have provided various pictures and detailed instructions to help you make this pattern. You may have to zoom in on some pictures.

This pattern was designed with Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6 in the colorways White 001 (1 skein), Bordeaux 060 or Light Brown 006 (1 skein), Dark Powder Rose 064 or Purple 039 (1 skein)
Pastel Yellow 053 (1 skein), and Pastel Mint 025 (1 skein). Exact amounts of the yarn used are provided in the pattern. A 3.25mm (D-3) crochet hook, a pair of 8mm doll safety eyes, 20g of fiberfill, yarn needle, stitch markers, pearlized sewing pins, a wire brush, a scissor, and a ruler.

The average size of the dolls are listed below:
Asra measures 14.5cm tall from the tip of its antennae to the bottom of its legs. From the tip of the antennae to the bottommost point of the hindwing, Asra measures 21cm. With wings outstretched, Asra measures 18.5cm from one side to the other.
Note: Be aware your doll may vary in size from mine. I have been told I have a tight tension when it comes to my stitches. These measurements were taken with a luna moth made with Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6 and a 3.25mm (D-3) crochet hook.

You should be familiar with the following stitches and skills for this pattern:

Gauge is not terribly important in amigurumi. However, if you wish to make a similarly sized doll as mine, or if you want to ensure that different types of yarn are of the same thickness, make a gauge swatch to match mine or to test that the different yarns have a similar swatch size. Use the following pattern for your gauge swatch.
R1: 6sc into a mr 6
R2: (sc-inc)x6 12
R3: (sc, sc-inc)x6 18
R4: (2sc, sc-inc)x6 24
R5: (3sc, sc-inc)x6 30
My swatch measured 4.5cm in diameter with Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6. If your swatch measures the same as mine (or to each other if you are testing two different types of yarns), our tensions match. Frog the swatch and continue with the pattern. If yours is bigger, repeat R1-R5 with a smaller hook (go down half or one hook size) than the one specified in the pattern, make another swatch, and compare the sizes again. If yours is smaller, make another swatch using a larger hook (go up half or one hook size) than the one specified in the pattern, and compare the sizes again. Do not try to achieve the swatch size by matching my tension, as you will naturally revert back to your normal tension as you continue to crochet. However, it is not crucial that our tensions match for this pattern so do not feel pressured to have the exact same sized swatch as me. Do try to use the same type of yarn for all pieces of this project to minimize any size disparities.

Though all of the pieces should be securely sewn, with enough force, pieces may come loose and pose a choking hazard. This pattern uses doll safety eyes, which may pose a choking hazard for children.
