I’d been thinking about short rows and how to use them for shaping quite a bit when I started this design. I’d wanted to play around with using them for yoke shaping…and so, here we are!

Assateague is inspired by the movement of the tide on the shoreline. During my summer vacation to the lower Eastern Shore of the Delmarva peninsula, this pattern was born, thanks to the lovely inspiration of the waves, sand, and sandpipers.

For those of you who hate purling, this sweater is for you! With a garter stitch yoke and stockinette body, there is very minimal purling involved. Knit top-down with no seaming, this is an excellent choice for a project when you want a little something interesting to start and then to taper off the difficulty.

Use your favorite fingering weight yarn with good memory for this light sweater. You can use three colors, following the model, or one or two--the color scheme is flexible and up to you. Assateague would also look fantastic with a main color and lots of bits of extra sock yarn you have stashed away.
