This pattern and its sister pattern, Asscher Beanie, were inspired by my love of 1920’s fashion, architecture, and basically any design of the time.

I love the freedom of this period, its timeless elegance, and even its fashion which would not be out of place in today’s society.

To me, diamonds represent the strength, durability and elegance of the 1920’s and will forever remind me of this time of renewal, hope and a desire to do better, be better than what has passed.

The Asscher Cowl name was inspired by the family that developed, in 1902, the asscher cut for diamonds. The asscher cut is a stepped, square cut featuring cropped corners and straight lines which visually draw the eye deeper into the centre, like being lost in a beautiful maze. I love this description of the cut, and felt it was meant to be.

The pattern is constructed using mosaic colour work, so no carrying yarn, just one colour per round and slipping stitches. Easy!

I was thrilled to design these patterns in collaboration with yarn dyer, Julie Asselin. I used her stunning Leizu Fingering (90% superwash merino, 10% silk, 385m/420yds per skein) in the colourway Alpin and Cite d’or. This beautiful yarn is perfect for the changing of the seasons.

YARN
Main Colour (MC):
150 yds/140m (for largest size) fingering weight yarn, shown in Julie Asselin, Leizu Fingering (90% superwash merino, 10% silk, 420yds/385m per skein) in Alpin.

Contrasting Yarn (CC):
80 yds/75m (for largest size) fingering weight yarn, shown in Julie Asselin, Leizu Fingering (90% superwash merino, 10% silk, 420yds/385m per skein) in Alpin or Cite d’or.

YARN AMOUNT
MC - 82 grams
CC – 30 grams

NOTE: This cowl with triangle has only one size. However the pattern does have instructions to make it without the triangle AND the cowl is really easy to make bigger. This is done by not knitting the triangle section of the cowl, just the main body of the cowl. The stitch increase are given at the end of the pattern and will give you a medium and large sized cowl.

Yarn amounts to knit the larger sizes of the cowl are not given at this stage, however you should be able to make the largest size with 100g of MC and 50g of CC.
