Whiteowlcrochetco. Aster Tee

Overview

Shoulders & Bust
You will work this sweater tee from the top down (i.e., beginning at the shoulders, ending at the hem), first working the back panel flat in rows, then the left and right front panels flat in rows, one at a time. Each of the three panels will have armpit shaping; the two front panels will also have collar shaping. Both armpit and collar shaping will be formed by combining different rates of increases along the edges of the worked panel. Backwards loop cast on stitches will then be used to join the two front panels together at the collar then again to join the front and back panels together at each armpit.

Body
Once the panels are joined, you will switch to working in the round, working the body to either the provided crop length or full length, or to your desired length. Recall, modifications will alter your required yardage. The hem begins with a Lateral Braid Stitch, and finishes with a folded hem.

Join Shoulders & Work Collar
You will join the shoulders using your desired method, then pick up stitches along the collar with a smaller needle. You will work in stockinette stitch (in the round) until you reach the required number of rounds, at which point you will work a stretchy folded collar.

Sleeve
You will begin each sleeve by picking up stitches at the armpit and along the sides of the armhole. You will then work Japanese short rows to form a “Shoulder Cap” - this angles your sleeve downwards at an angle instead of working it straight out from the shoulder - as well as some sleeve shaping. Once your cap is completed, you’ll join in the round and work a folded hem, similar to the body hem, with a Lateral Braid Stitch.

Pattern Tester Feedback

“This is one of the nicest-fitting garments I have ever knit! The folded hems, lateral braids, Japanese short rows, and even provisional cast on/three needle bind off at the shoulders means it’s also the most professionally finished shirt I’ve ever made! The Cap Sleeves are an especially favourite feature of mine, and the new and well-explained techniques in the pattern means they are the best-fitting sleeves I have ever experienced in a pattern!”
-- Holly V.H, hollyvanhuizen

“The Aster Tee might come across as a basic Tee pattern. But, I was so fascinated with the amount of thought that has gone into making this design just your perfect Basic Tee. The lateral braids add an extra design element and help transition the garment from the Body/sleeve to the hem. For me, the star of this garment are the sleeves - working the Japanese Short Rows for the first time just blew my mind. They were not difficult and they resulted in such a perfectly shaped sleeve. And I’m absolutely thrilled with the result!!”
- Judith S., PensiveKnits

“This is the perfect casual summer tee! With Mollie’s creativity with short rows, the sleeves fit perfectly and I couldn’t be happier with the fit and feel of the finished product in general!”
- Marnie D., marnield

Sizes

To determine your size, measure your chest around the widest point, then locate the closest value listed beside “Suggested Bust”. This pattern has
2 ¼” (~6 cm) of positive ease in the bust, 2” (~5 cm) positive ease in the bicep, and 1-1 ¼” (2.5-3 cm) positive ease in the armhole depth. If you have a large measurement difference between your full bust and your upper bust and/or waist, you may wish to choose a size based on your upper bust measurement (taken underneath your armpits) and add bust darts to the front of your tee. This will allow for a smoother fit along your back and likely provide a better fit for your sleeves as well. This pattern does not dive into bust darts, but resources are provided. If you would like a roomier fit, size up. If you would like a a closer fit, size down.
