Astrid Baby Blanket
The knitting pattern for ASTRID baby blanket - a curious geometric design. Perfect for beginners as it only requires knit and purl stitches. The pattern is easy and relaxing, but fun enough to knit. The blanket is named after Astrid Lindgren - the author of my favourite children’s books.
All my baby blanket patterns are reversible, so the right side of the blanket is one less thing to worry about for the new mom!
Includes row by row instructions to make two sizes.
YARN: Any worsted/aran weight yarn labeled in the range of 75-90m (82-100yds) per 50g (1.75oz) and meeting gauge requirements. Merino wool is usually best for babies if you’re going for a natural fibre.
NEEDLES: 5mm (8 US) cable needles. The total length should be larger than the desired blanket width. Use smaller 4.5mm (7 US) or larger 5.5mm (9 US) needles if your gauge is significantly off.
OTHER TOOLS: Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends. Optional: two stitch markers, row counter.
ORIGINAL YARN: Big Merino by Drops, Full by BBB Filati, or Bingo by Lana Grossa.
GAUGE: 16-18 stitches to 22-24 rows in 10x10cm (4x4’’) in stitch pattern, blocked. Meeting the stated gauge exactly is not critical for a blanket, but always swatch to avoid surprises.
SMALL BLANKET SIZE: approx. 64x68cm (25x27in.). Perfect for bassinet or pram.
SMALL BLANKET YARDAGE: at least 7 skeins or 530m (580yds)
LARGE BLANKET SIZE: approx. 92x97cm (36x38in.). Best for crib and large enough to last through the toddler age.
LARGE BLANKET YARDAGE: at least 15 skeins or 1135m (1240yds)
This pattern can be applied to other yarn weight and needle size the Custom Sizes section.
