Astrophil
Inspired by Sir Phillip Sydney’s sonnet sequence detailing the romance between Astrophil, or Star Lover, and his beloved Stella, or Star (subtlety of naming was never a feature of sonnets—Dante’s beloved is Beatrice, or Blessed One, and Shakespeare is downright opaque, calling his mistress The Dark Lady).
My Great-Grandma Stella was a knitter. To this day, any trip to see my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins means I know I’ll see one of her trademark striped acrylic chevron afghans draped over a sofa and there’s a good chance I’ll end up snuggling up under it at some point. The Astrophil scarf is an update of that classic chevron pattern knit in a more luxurious fiber and portable size, but one of these days I may get around to knitting a sofa sized version …
MATERIALS:
300 yds sport or dk weight yarn
30inch #6 (4.25 mm) circular needle OR size needed to obtain gauge

GAUGE:
6 stitches per inch; 3 inches from decrease ridge to decrease ridge

FINISHED SIZE:
Length (measured at wider edge): 45 inches
Width (measured along a decrease ridge): 12 inches

YARN SUBSTITUTION:
With a little swatch work, you can work this in any yarn you like: swatch a single repeat of Stella’s Chevron on needles appropriately sized to your yarn and measure the horizontal difference between the decrease ridges. Divide your desired size by the width of each repeat to determine the number of repeats you will need. This pattern may also be worked end to end. With bulkier yarns, the repeated K3tog of the Star Eyelet Increase may be cumbersome; try highly pointed needles for maneuverability.
