Atami
INTRODUCTION
Atami is a classic drop shoulder cardigan knitted seamlessly from the bottom up in one piece, divided into three sections at the underarm (two fronts and one back panel). After joining at the shoulders, sleeve stitches are picked up and worked down to the cuff. The cardigan is completed by knitting the ribbed buttonband and finishing with the ribbed neckband.
SIZING
6 Sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4)5, 6.
Atami is designed to be worn slightly oversized so I suggest choosing a cardigan with between 8-16” {20.5 - 40.5 cm} of positive ease at the bust. Sample is worn with 15” {38 cm} of positive ease.
• Bust Circumference: 40.75 (46.75, 51, 55)61, 67 inches, {103.5 (118.5, 129.5, 139.5)155, 170 cm}.
• Upper Arm Circumference: 14.25 (15.25, 16.5, 18)21.5, 24 inches, {36 (38.5, 42, 45.5)54.5, 61 cm}.
• Total Length: 22.25 (22.75, 23, 23.25)24, 25 inches, {56.5 (58, 58.5, 59)61, 63.5 cm}.
• Sleeve Length from Mid Back to Cuff: 28.5 (28.75, 28.75, 28.75)28.75, 28.75 inches, {72.5 (73, 73, 73)73, 73 cm}.
YARN
DK (Light #3)
• 965 (1050, 1130, 1200)1350, 1480 yards.
• • 882 (960, 1033, 1097)1234, 1353 meters.
• Sample 1 uses: Cotton Sprout DK by Premier (100% Cotton - 230 yards {210 m}/ 100g) in the colorway Hunter Green.
I don’t recommend this yarn, as it began to pill significantly after just a couple of weeks of wearing the Atami. That said, it is more affordable and very soft, making it a good option if you’re comfortable with frequent depilling.
• Sample 2 uses: Daylights by Harrisville Designs (American Cormo and Wool - 250 yards {229 m}/ 100g) in the colorway Bloodshot.
This yarn was fantastic, and much easier to block than the cotton sprout, but a little more pricey.
NEEDLES
• Gauge: US 6 (4 mm).
I recommend a 32” {80 cm} circular set for the body, and a 16” {40 cm} set for the sleeves.
Or size to match gauge.
• Rib: 2 sizes smaller than the gauge needles in the same cord lengths.
OTHER MATERIALS
• 3rd needle of similar size to gauge set.
• 9 buttons measuring 1” {25 mm}.
• Removable stitch marker.
• Yarn needle.
GAUGE
Stockinette (worked flat)
• 19 sts / 29 rows = 4” {10 cm}
Note: The gauge in the round may vary slightly from the flat gauge. If the difference is significant, adjust the needle size for the sleeves accordingly. Otherwise you can block out the difference in the end.
