The Atomic pattern is one in my evolving series of patterns celebrating science, design and knitting.

The Rutherford (1911) model of the atom with its positively charged nucleus, orbiting electrons and depiction of the atom as being mostly empty space is the inspiration for this pattern. An iconic design motif provides for an interesting stranded colourwork knit and the corrugated ribbing brim and embroidered subatomic particles add further detail to this science-y project.

The hat is knit in the round. Stitch counts and instructions are given for both hat sizes. Stranded colourwork charts are provided for the hat samples shown in the pattern: one medium, one large. Feel free to use your own colour palette and tweak the design to your liking. You should note that the larger hat size has an additonal two stitches across the colourwork repeat, so select the correct chart for your desired hat size. Choice of a multi-coloured or two-tone brim is up to you; both are exemplified in the ribbing charts for the hat samples.
