au Bois
Au Bois is a rustic cabled cowl that hangs well with minimal fuss. It is knit flat and live sts are grafted onto the cast on edge for a seamless finish. Its overall shape is achieved via the use of short rows.
Finished Size: 11” / 28 cm high with a circumference at the top of 24” / 61 cm and at 39.5” / 100 cm at the bottom.
Yarn Requirements: Approximately 400 yards / 366 meters of worsted weight wool. The sample shown used 3.25 balls of Knit Picks Swish (100% Superwash Merino Wool & 110 yards / 100 meters per 50g) Colorway: Squirrel Heather. Please note that if you substitute for a heavier fiber you might need more than the stated yardage.
Needles and Notions: US size 9 / 5.5 mm straight needles. 3 stitch markers, tapestry needle, removable stitch marker (optional).
Techniques used: Cabling, short rows, and grafting.
The short rows involved make the two cables on the outside be on different row numbers than the cables on the inside for a good portion of the project. There is a table in the pattern to help keep track of which row numbers you should be on. In addition to this, one of my testers, Lisa Cromar, put together a row by row guide for the cables and has graciously offered it as an aide to others. It is available as a supplemental PDF that you can download if you prefer to have an extra level of reassurance.
Many thanks to Dana Gervais for tech editing this pattern. Thank you also to my testers.
