If you are not very familiar with all the techniques
used in this pattern, watch the tutorial videos and read

Before knitting, read whole instructions.

SIZE GUIDE: S (M)

There are two sizes included in the description of this pattern:

  • S (for 53-55 cm 21-22 in head circumference),
  • M (for 56-59 cm 22-23 in head circumference).

Measure your head circumference and select the correct size from the table. Regardless of your head circumference, you can also choose a smaller size if you want the balaclava to fit more snugly around your face or a larger size if you prefer a more loose-fitting balaclava.

INSTRUCTIONS:

You will make the balaclava with a brioche stitch, working from the bottom up. Once you cast on your stitches, you will work in the round until you reach the indicated work height. You will then bind off some of the stitches and start working in rows. In the meantime you will make increases and decreases to model the balaclava. You will also work in short rows. Finally, you will bind off the stitches, joining the two edges of the work together and make a pleat with holes for the cord.

MATERIALS:

200 g (4 skeins) Drops Baby Merino (50 g = 175 m 191 yd, 100% merino wool)

NEEDLES & ACCESSORIES:

• 2 mm US 0 circular needles with a 40 and 60 cm 16″ and 24″ cable (alternatively, 2 mm US 0 circular needles with a 50 cm 20″ cable) or other size suitable for obtaining the correct gauge size
• 2 mm B-1 crochet hook
• additional 2 mm US 0 needle to join the two edges of the work together (can be replaced by a 2 mm B-1 crochet hook)
• stitch markers
• darning needle
• measuring tape
• row counter
• safety pin

GAUGE:

The following gauge was made on 2 mm US 0 needles and measured:

• before blocking: 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 in = 28.5 sts x 38 rows in brioche
• after blocking: 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 in = 23 sts x 33 rows in brioche

The value 28.5 / 23 sts corresponds to 28.5 / 23 brioche stitches (i.e. its columns), the yarn overs being a coherent part of the brioche stitch do not count as part of the number of stitches given in the pattern. Whereas the indicated number of rows corresponds to 38 / 33 knit stitches in one brioche column (1 knit stitch in a column equals 2 worked brioche rows).
