Audur
Audur is a top-down triangular shawl with a lace border featuring nupps and the Estonian “tower” motif.
The shawl can be easily resized. Instructions to do so are given in the pattern.
The pattern has been test-knitted. It assumes that you can read charts, cast on provisionally, and have some experience knitting lace. A link is provided for 2 techniques to work nupps. The pattern contains a comprehensive photo tutorial for attaching the edging.

Audur is part of my series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. The original shawl was knitted in Lopi einband from Iceland.
The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.
Audur is the name of Gisli Sursson’s wife in The Saga of Gisli the Outlaw. When Eyjolf the Grey offers her 30 pieces of silver to betray her husband, she takes the bag of coins and hits him in the face with it until his nose bleeds, saying, “Did you really think that I would sell my husband into your hands? Go now, and remember for the rest of your life that a woman has thrashed you.”
