Pi shawls inspired by the mathematic concept of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter always make stunning pieces. They start with a few stitches worked from the center out with spaced out increases. This construction gives you the ability to work larger sections of beautiful lace or texture stitch patterns.

Begin with double pointed needles (DPNs) or two circular needles, and continue with circular needles. I chose stitch patterns that add both texture and open lace with an unusual center. Most Pi shawls have the same design all around in each section. I decided to switch it up a bit by working different stitch patterns next to each other in some of the sections to add interest and movement.

If you’ve never worked a Pi shawl, you may at first think of the many stitches you end up with, but there is something very relaxing about working in the round, as well as the rhythm that comes with repeating patterns more than a couple of times. The stitch patterns I chose are not overly complicated. You will find many rows are very easy to memorize.

From fingering yarn for a delicate piece to a heavier yarn that can turn this shawl into a baby blanket or a throw for your sofa, you may choose the yarn type you are most comfortable with.

As usual, I have color-coded instructions within each section to make reading and following the pattern easier. The written and charted instructions are also divided by section.
