Aureum
Aureum is the first design in my Japanese Maple series. Acer shirasawanum ‘Aureum’, or golden full moon maple as it is commonly known, is famous for its unique spring yellow-green. The round leaves have sharply pointed lobes and their texture differs from other maples in the ‘Palmata’ group. Its fall colour can be spectacular and can range from brilliant orange to a rich coral, depending on the weather. It is a particular favourite of mine.
The shawl is worked in one piece, starting at one side by casting on a single stitch, and ends at the other side by working the last 3 stitches together. The border is worked at the same time as the body, and contains optional beads. Short rows are used in the shaping. The depth of the shawl increases until almost half of the yarn is used and then decreases on the second half.
This shawl is shown in fingering weight yarn, but any weight from laceweight to worsted can be used. Simply increase until you have used almost half of your yarn, and then decrease. There are no long cast-ons or bind-offs. Beads are optional.
This design is perfect for that special skein of luxury yarn or handspun. The construction allows you to use almost every bit of the yarn without risk of running short.
The design is considered intermediate, because of the short rows and varying stitch count. However, an adventurous beginner may also enjoy this shawl.
Both charts as well as written instructions are provided.
