I had seen photos of the Northern Lights growing up, but when I moved north and saw them in person for the first time, I was amazed by the constant movement. The shifting waves of colour in this stranded colourwork cowl represent that awesome show of dancing lights (the name Aurora Polaris refers to both southern and northern lights). This cowl is knit from the bottom up, in the round, using simple stranded colourwork with short floats.

Gauge: The recommended gauge is not critical, but will affect the fabric you get, the final size of your cowl, and the yarn required.

Materials/Notions:

• fingering weight wool or wool blend: 140-170 yds (128-155 m) for main colour and 90-120 yds (82-110 m) for contrast colour - two 50g skeins would be more than enough
• stitch marker
• darning needle
• scissors or snips
