Australian Kangaroo and Joey
My pattern for the knitted version of the beautiful eastern grey kangaroo and it’s baby, which live all around here.
Call her Skippy, if you like!
Yes, I grew up watching that show…
Knitted flat using DK or Light Worsted wool and 3mm or US Size 3 knitting needles.
The finished mother will be about 46 cm or 18 inches high and the Joey 15 cm or 6 inches high.
Both mother and baby are easy to knit, but mother takes a little while to complete. Well worth it though!
The baby is a quick project.
Did you know:
A male kangaroo is called a boomer
A female kangaroo is called a flyer
A baby kangaroo is called a joey
The word kangaroo derives from the Guugu Yimithirr word gangurru, referring to grey kangaroos. The eastern grey kangaroo is a marsupial found in southern and eastern Australia, with a population of several million. It is also known as the great grey kangaroo and the Forester kangaroo.
Eastern grey kangaroos have a woolly fur which is silvery-grey to dusky greyish-brown in colour.
An adult male can reach a height of nearly 2.2m when standing erect and weigh in excess of 60kg.
Females are smaller, rarely exceeding 1.8m.
