Austrian Traveling Stitch Hat
by Laura Farson
The stitch patterns in this hat reflect the knitting traditions preserved at Trautenfels Castle in Austria. This Twisted-Stitch Knitting is referred to as “Bavarian Knitting.” Stitches twist and sometimes travel in delicate intricate patterns that are more prominent than typical cable knitting. These stitch patterns are often used for socks and sweaters, mittens, gloves, and hats. There are countless pattern variations, as depicted in Maria Erlbacher’s book, Twisted-Stitch Knitting. Included here are the “Big Overlay,” “Burning Love,” “Double Zero,”and “Large Double Chain with Twisted Band” patterns.
