The Autumn Hippie Shawl is a top-down, triangular shawl with attributes of a sampler shawl. There are different patterns used in many of the sections but none too difficult for the beginning to intermediate knitter. This shawl was inspired by the changing of the leaves that happen as early as August here in Utah. I can see the mountains from my kitchen window and although the weather still feels very Summer-like at my home in the valley, the Autumn weather has already begun to creep into the mountains. I chose five colors that represent Autumn but you can choose any colors that make you happy. You may even be able to use up a mini-skein, or two, and don’t be afraid to use fewer colors or more colors than I used.

There is a lace pattern in the last section but if this lace pattern doesn’t suit you, feel free to knit the last section in stockinette.

My favorite part of the shawl, which comes after blocking the completed garment, are the long tassels. I wanted to create a shawl that was representative of some of the things I love. I am a child of the 70s and I remember my mother crocheting me an orange poncho with long fringes on it. I loved this poncho so much because of those long fringes! If tassels aren’t your thing, feel free to leave them off.
