Autumn In Yaddo
The AUTUMN IN YADDO SHAWL is a collaboration with Whole Knit N’ Caboodle Yarns and Common Thread Saratoga. It is the first of a series of shawls to reflect the Four Seasons of Yaddo Gardens in Saratoga Springs, NY. The gardens of Yaddo were a gift from notable Saratoga Springs resident Spencer Trask to his wife, Katrina, in 1899. Four marble statues, one representing each season, have stood in the classical Italian garden since 1909, and are a fixture of the the beautiful gardens that the Trasks made available for public enjoyment and are part of the 400 acre estate that has served as an artists’ retreat since 1926. The statue representing the season of Fall holds sheaves of wheat. AUTUMN IN YADDO was designed with patterns, textures, and colors reminiscent of wheat, harvest, and the beauty of fall in upstate New York. The shape lends itself to wrapping around one’s shoulders, while also serving as a cozy scarf to wrap around one’s neck in the crispness of autumn. While Yaddo Gardens has beenclosed to the public since 2020, you can still enjoy the textures and pattern of this shawl.
Details and materials:
Sizes: One size
Measurements: Approximately 65” x 15”
Yarn Requirements:
Fingering weight yarn in 3 contrasting colors (100% wool or other natural fiber is preferred, to
ensure good blocking): approximately 350 yards of main color (MC), 310 yards of contrast
color #1 (CC1), and 275 yards of contrast color #2 (CC2).
The sample uses Woo-Light by Whole Knit N’ Caboodle (100% super wash merino wool, 438
yards/100g) in 3 colors:
Needles: U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) in 32” length, recommended, and either a spare 24” needle, an
extra interchangeable needle cord, or a length of scrap yarn.
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, blocking materials (blocking wires pins, and foam
blocking mats preferred, to block the lace sections out to size somewhat aggressively.)
Gauge: Approximately 12 stitches and 17 rows to 2” in stockinette stitch, before blocking.
Gauge is not crucial for this garment; choose a combination of yarn/needle that produces a
fabric you like, keeping in mind that it may alter yardage requirements/finished measurements.
