The pattern uses simple sc and dc to create the Overlay Mosaic. The detailed instructions should be helpful even for beginners. The pattern is easily worked for both left and right handers.
Being a Mug Rug, it should be ideally be worked in a cotton yarn. Though the pattern is written for DK (#3) yarn, any thickness could be used, noting that the final size will vary.
