Avanenn
This lace hat is named Avanenn, which means raspberry in Cornish.
Skill Level
This is an intermediate-advanced pattern, and may be time consuming for the size. The pattern is intricate but repetitive.
Lace is worked on every round, with no rest rounds.
This pattern is fully charted and written (English), and tally boxes are provided in the written pattern to keep track of rounds.
Needles
16” (40cm) circulars, DPNs, or long circulars for magic loop.
- Size 5 (3.75mm) for ribbing
- Size 8 (5mm) for body
Gauge
20sts, 26 rounds in 4” (10cm) stockinette with larger needles, or 1 pattern repeat in 2.5” (6.35cm)
Size
- Child-teen: 20” (51cm) blocked
- Adult: 22.5” (57cm) blocked
Height stretches to fit, so this hat is fairly forgiving as long as the width is correct.
Fit
Fitted, slightly slouchy, and slouchy. Fit affects height of the hat, but it is NOT slouchy unless blocked, as the lace opens up beautifully when blocked but when it hasn’t been blocked, it is very compact.
Ribbing
Both short and long ribbing options are given. Long ribbing can be worn long (which makes the hat slouchier) or folded (for the same fit as short ribbing).
Yarn
100-180 yards (91.5-164.5m) worsted weight 4 yarn depending on size, fit, and ribbing length. See chart (in pictures and downloads) for total yardage estimates for all sizes, ribbing lengths, and fits.
This pattern works best with solid colors or subtle variegations, stripes or highly contrastive variegations will distract from the patterning. A second color can be used for the ribbing, in which case 25-65 yards (23-60m) may be used for ribbing depending on size and ribbing length.
- I used about 96 yards (88m) in Caron Simply Soft color Strawberry for the child-teen size, short ribbing, slightly slouchy.
- I used about 98 yards (90m) in Caron Simply Soft color Orchid for the adult size, short ribbing, fitted.
- I used about 135 yards (123.5m) in Caron Simply Soft color Soft Green for the child-teen size, long ribbing, slouchy.
